Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster FMT HSS MN BPG Black Burst — Gateway to the Fender Family

This electric guitar is a thoughtfully equipped instrument that brings the iconic Stratocaster silhouette into the hands of players ready to explore rock, blues, pop, and beyond. A flame maple top crowns a slim poplar body, while the HSS pickup arrangement pairs a fat ceramic humbucker at the bridge with two crisp ceramic single-coils for genuine tonal range. The Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster FMT HSS MN BPG Black Burst is built around the same time-honored Fender design language that has defined the Stratocaster for decades, offering a credible entry point for guitarists who want authentic Strat feel without the flagship price tag.

What Sets This Strat Apart in Its Class

Unlike many beginner-tier Strats, this model dresses up the classic double-cutaway shape with a flame maple veneer that gives the Black Burst finish real visual depth. The 2-point synchronized tremolo with block saddles delivers smoother pitch-bending action than vintage 6-screw designs, and the sealed die-cast tuning machines with split shafts make restringing noticeably easier. A large 70s-style headstock — exclusive to the HSS configuration in the Affinity line — adds a distinctive visual signature that separates this guitar from its SSS siblings.

Body Construction — Lightweight Poplar with a Flame Maple Top

The body shape and weight of a Stratocaster directly affect how long a player can comfortably stand on stage or sit through a practice session. A lighter body reduces shoulder fatigue and makes the guitar easier to handle for younger or smaller-framed players, while a figured top adds aesthetic appeal that elevates the instrument beyond a basic workhorse.

• Body Material: Poplar — a tonewood that keeps overall weight down while delivering balanced resonance for clean and driven tones alike.
\n
• Top Material: Flame Maple — a thin decorative veneer that gives the Black Burst finish its eye-catching grain pattern without adding significant mass.
\n
• Body Finish: Gloss Polyurethane — a durable, polished surface that protects the wood against everyday wear and humidity changes.

Neck and Fingerboard — Playability That Encourages Long Sessions

The neck profile and fingerboard geometry determine how easily a player can form chords, bend strings, and move up the fretboard during solos. A comfortable carve reduces hand cramping and supports faster progress for developing players, while a modern fingerboard radius accommodates both rhythm chording and lead bends without compromise.

• Neck Material: Maple — a bright, stable tonewood that contributes snappy attack and reliable truss-rod performance over time.
\n
• Neck Shape: "C" profile — a slim, medium carve that fits comfortably in most hand sizes and supports both chord work and lead playing.
\n
• Fingerboard Material: Maple — a smooth playing surface with a clean visual contrast against black dot position inlays.
\n
• Fingerboard Radius: 241 mm (9.5") — a modern, gently curved surface that handles chord shapes and string bending with equal ease.
\n
• Scale Length: 648 mm (25.5") — the classic Fender scale that produces the bright, articulate string response the Stratocaster is known for.
\n
• Nut Width: 42 mm (1.650") — a comfortable string spacing that suits fingerstyle players and pickers transitioning from smaller beginner guitars.
\n
• Number of Frets: 21 Medium Jumbo — accessible upper-register notes with a fret size that supports accurate bending and clean vibrato.

Pickups and Electronics — HSS Versatility in One Guitar

Pickup configuration defines the sonic personality of an electric guitar more than any other component. An HSS layout combines the warmth and output of a humbucker with the sparkling clarity of single-coils, letting one instrument cover genres that traditionally require different guitars. The 5-way switching expands the palette further, giving players access to quacky in-between tones that have defined Stratocaster recordings since the 1970s.

• Pickup Configuration: HSS — a humbucker in the bridge position paired with single-coils in the middle and neck, covering everything from clean chime to high-gain rock.
\n
• Bridge Pickup: Ceramic Humbucker — delivers thicker, warmer output with reduced 60-cycle hum, ideal for rock leads and overdriven rhythm work.
\n
• Middle and Neck Pickups: Ceramic Single-Coil — voiced in-house at Fender to produce crisp, articulate tones with the classic Stratocaster bell-like character.
\n
• Controls: Master Volume, Tone 1 (Neck/Middle), Tone 2 (Bridge) — a familiar Strat layout that lets players shape each pickup zone independently.
\n
• Switching: 5-Position Blade — Position 1 bridge, Position 2 bridge + middle, Position 3 middle, Position 4 middle + neck, Position 5 neck for full tonal range.
\n
• Bridge: 2-Point Synchronized Tremolo with Block Saddles — provides smoother tremolo action and improved tuning stability compared to vintage 6-screw designs.
\n
• Tuning Machines: Sealed Die-Cast with Split Shafts — keep the guitar in tune through aggressive tremolo use and simplify string changes.

Who This Guitar Is For

This model is the right choice for developing guitarists and intermediate players who want a versatile, stage-ready Stratocaster without stepping into flagship pricing. Beginners moving past their first guitar will appreciate the slim "C" neck and lightweight body, which reduce the physical demands of longer practice sessions, while the HSS pickup layout gives them room to grow across genres from indie and pop to classic rock and blues. Intermediate players looking for a reliable backup or a modding platform will find the flame maple top, full-size electronics cavity, and 2-point tremolo offer genuine upgrade potential. Players who primarily perform clean rhythm and need glassy single-coil chime will benefit from the neck and middle ceramic single-coils, while those who lean toward heavier styles can switch to the bridge humbucker for thicker, hum-free output.
